Write 4 Taking Candy From the Trash!? At 2:38AM???

πŸͺž Reflection:

Back in the day, when I first started working I would hear a lot about employees getting written up and fired for taking food from their places of work that was going to be trashed anyways. The argument in favor of this type of policy was always framed as a “health” concern, that the food was no longer considered edible as if with the turn of the clock a switched turned on. From delicious to disgusting.

I never understood the policy.

When you think about all the food waste the United States produces, and all the food insecurity/hunger that many of us face here due to lack of resources, taking food that was going to be thrown away, or already thrown away makes total sense. It’s still edible, it’s just all in a trash bag instead of a shelf.

On May 28th I was working a late night post at my Security Guard position until 2am the next day. I was approached by a group of coworkers to let me know I am free to leave my post and go home. We were all walking as a group towards the exit when I spot some candy on top of the trash can. I investigate and discover it’s unopened and it’s also one of my favorite candies! I take them.

A supervisor spots me, and with the most unsure character I have ever experienced from a supervisor he tells me “you’re not supposed to do that.”, He is also smiling as he tells me.

I take it as a joke, “you’re not supposed to do that” is not a command but a suggestive comment. I respond “did you see anything?” And I walk away with the candy in hand. I waited till I got home to eat it.

About two weeks later I get called in by two supervisors into their office. They let me know that I have a write up on my record for “insubordination”, “derogatory and demeaning comments” and “theft”. They ask me to sign. I refuse and I go back to my post. I later write a response. I apologize to the supervisor as it seems my behavior intimidated him in some way, I ask that he be retrained on how to be a supervisor, and ultimately ask for the written policies of the work site in order to avoid miscommunication.

Im told that they apologize as well for the miscommunication but that there is nothing for them to give me to follow.

I let them know to keep expecting written responses if more write ups occur. πŸ“
